The leading cause of cats being turned over to rescues is because of improper litterbox usage.
Causes include medical problems, aversion to the litter and litterbox, not enough litterboxes, marking behaviors through spraying, poor house training, and social and environmental stressors.
Below is a list of things you can do to prevent your cat from peeing outside the litterbox.
Neuter your cat!
Proper Litterboxes
Use the correct number of litterboxes. The rule is one box per cat, plus 1. They should be placed in different locations and on different floors in your home. Avoid noisy areas or areas that are heavily trafficked.
Make sure your litterbox is the right size.
Trays should be at least 1.5x the length of your cat’s body (most litter boxes are too small; storage boxes and small dog litter pans make excellent boxes). Litter depth preference of most cats is about 1.5 inches.
Playing time with your cat daily is important. At least 15 minutes per day, twice a day. It relieves boredom and stress which can help to minimize issues with the litterbox.
