Upper respiratory infections – this is the feline version of a cold.

  • Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, eye discharge, lethargy, lack of appetite and sometimes a fever.
  • Common causes are feline herpes Type 1 and feline calicivirus, both of which have vaccines.

Kidney disease or CKD occurs over time and the kidneys eventually shut down.

There are four stages of CKD.

  • Signs include weight loss, lethargy and difference in fur texture.

Bladder and kidney stones (or crystals) – two types exist (struvite and calcium oxalate).

This can affect males and females.

They can lead to a urinary blockage which is a medical emergency.

Diet (wet food) and increased water intake can help avoid stones.

Dental and gum disease, this occurs due to a buildup up plaque and tarter. Regular brushing of the teeth and dental cleanings can help to avoid this.

Arthritis – a degenerative joint disease that typically develops among older cats.

Although not limited to older cats. If your cat starts to slow down and develops behavioral issues a vet visit is necessary.

The above are some of the more common issues some cats (not all) can experience so annual veterinary visits are recommended!
