There is a lot of work involved with running an animal shelter.
Shelters take in pets and then have to vet applicants so the animals can be placed in well suited homes.
They also look for people that are willing to be a foster parent.
Many shelters help the community with trap-neuter-release programs. Some set up low cost spay and neuter clinics in the community.
Funding may come from fund raisers the shelters organize to pay for the cost to run a shelter.
Adoption fees only cover a fraction of the operational costs of a shelter.
Much of the work done at animal shelters is by volunteers. Full-time staff positions are limited.
Shelters need people to clean.
Animals need to be fed and watered.
Litter boxes need to be cleaned.
Vet bills, food bills and utility bills need to be paid.
If you want to help your local shelter here are some things you can do to help:
-Foster a pet
-Donate Funds
-Donate supplies – almost every shelter has a wish list on Amazon or Chewy
-Help with a fund raiser
-Volunteer – walk a dog, clean some litter boxes or play with the animals.
Shelters can always use your help, and every little bit does make a difference.
